‘Deep Water’ Trailer: Ana de Armas and Ben Affleck Embrace Chaos

Deep Water Trailer - 2022 Adrian Lyne Film

Hulu released the Deep Water trailer on February 14, 2022. This news article contains spoilers for the 89-second teaser clip. Keep up with the latest industry headlines in the Vague Visages News section.

The Deep Water trailer promotes the ninth feature by Adrian Lyne, an English director who is best known for the 80s films Flashdance (1983), 9 1/2 Weeks (1986) and Fatal Attraction (1987). After a 20-year break, Lyne returns with another erotic thriller starring Ben Affleck (Good Will Hunting, Argo) and Ana de Armas (Knives Out, No Time to Die), a former real-life couple who parted ways in early 2021. The Deep Water trailer includes just one scene, with de Armas’ Melinda seducing Affleck’s Vic. Given the rock on the former individual’s left hand, the characters appear to be already married, at least when considering the official film synopsis (per Variety):

“The film takes us inside the marriage of picture-perfect Vic (Affleck) and Melinda (de Armas) Van Allen to discover the dangerous mind games they play and what happens to the people that get caught up in them.”

Visually, the Deep Water trailer positions de Armas’ Melinda in a power position, as she hovers over Vic in an outdoors location and guides his hand towards her body. “Do you love me?” the woman says, perhaps seeking validation in her relationship or maybe participating in a twisted role-play scenario. Both characters acknowledge that there’s “something wrong” with them, suggesting that mental health issues will at once bring them closer while causing problems for others, as IMDb’s logline states that the husband becomes a murder suspect after allowing his wife to have affairs. There’s a clear parallel to David Fincher’s 2014 film Gone Girl, in which Affleck plays a murder suspect named Nick Dunne and Rosamund Pike co-stars as his manipulative wife, Amy. With Deep Water, I suspect that Melinda and Vic will be partners-in-crime in a neo-noir-ish tale.

Deep Water’s supporting cast includes Tracy Letts (Lady Bird, Ford v Ferrari), Rachel Blanchard (Peep Show, Fargo), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out, Vacation Friends), Finn Wittrock (Unbroken, American Horror Story), Jacob Elordi (The Kissing Booth, Euphoria), Dash Mihok (Romeo + Juliet, Silver Linings Playbook) and Kristen Connolly (The Cabin the Woods, Zoo).
